Question: There is a student whose father is expired and his/her mother takes care of that student; mother have some amount of gold with her. Can I help that student by zakat for his/her studies...?

Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Rahim !
A minor child is considered wealthy due to the wealth of his father. If the mother possesses the minimum amount of wealth (nisab), the child will not be deemed wealthy according to Shariah, and it is permissible to give such a child zakat. Therefore, in the question mentioned above, if the student does not personally possess nisab, it is permissible to assist him with zakat funds.
(و) لا إلى (طفله) بخلاف ولده الكبير و أبيه وامرأته الفقراء وطفل الغنية فيجوز لانتفاء المانع . (قوله: ولا إلى طفله) أى الغنى فيصرف إلى البالغ ولو ذكرا صحيحا قهستاني، فأفاد أن المراد بالطفل غير البالغ ذكرا كان أو أنثى فى عيال أبيه أولا على الأصح لما عنده أنه يعد غنيا بغناه نهر .
